Continuing the trip down memory lane

OK, so I’ve already written about the Hess’s holiday exhibit currently taking place at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum in Allentown. And perhaps if you didn’t have the pleasure of visiting this famous local department store during its heyday, that post meant nothing to you.
But if you’re someone who gets the whole “I (Still) Love Hess’s” thing, then there’s an upcoming event I want to tell you about. It takes place Monday, December 15 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Lehigh Valley Visitor Center on the corner of 9th & Hamilton Street in downtown Allentown, across from where the famed store used to stand.
It’s a book-signing event for the new book “Hess’s Department Store” by Arcadia Publishing. They’re the ones that do all of those local and regional historic books on towns like Bethlehem and attractions like Dorney Park.
Anyway, authors Frank Whelan and Kurt Zwikl will be signing copies of this “picture book,” which features page after page of black and white photos of the store pretty much from the time photography was invented up until the store closed in the early 1990s.
For those of us who remember and love Hess’s to this day, it is a trip back in time. How do I know, you ask? Frank lent me a preview copy of the book to check out last week and I was instantly caught up in the nostalgia. I since had to return the book, so I guess I will have to purchase my own. Think I’ll get copies for my mom and dad too for Christmas. They’ll get a kick out of it!
