A big day for Lehigh Valley (and I was there!)

For two years now, I’ve worked for Lehigh Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, the organization in charge of promoting Lehigh Valley as a tourist destination. Even though I’ve lived here for the majority of my life, before I started working there I didn’t even know the Convention and Visitors Bureau existed and never thought of the place I call home as one that people from New Jersey or New York would be interested in visiting. I mean, growing up all I thought there was to do here was

  • go to the movies
  • go to the mall
  • go skiing
  • go roller skating
  • go to Dorney Park

But over these past two years, I’ve discovered so many things about this area that I never knew existed, my favorite discovery being Dutch Springs, and have begun to understand what makes Lehigh Valley so enticing to visitors.

So what’s my point? Yesterday, my employer held a press conference to announce that it’s time for visitors to realize, just as I have, there’s so much to discover in Lehigh Valley. In front of a room filled with 50 or so people – members of the press and local businessmen and women – it was announced that we have changed our name to Discover Lehigh Valley (and our Discover Lehigh Valley contest). I felt so proud to be part of the newly named organization that put into words exactly what I went through over the past two years.

Lehigh Valleyian Marty Nothstein was even there. You know, Marty Nothstein, the cyclist who won like a bazillion medals including GOLD at the Olympics! (That’s him in the pic being interviewed by WFMZ 69 News.) He told us about his favorite Lehigh Valley discovery, which was actually the world of cycling, and just so happened to have his gold medal in his pocket to show us. I’ve been a bit under the weather lately, but I wish I hadn’t been because I would have loved to shake his hand and see that medal up close!
