A State & State Combo

Last Monday evening on my drive home from my guitar lesson, I was the first to call WDIY during a segment of Folk Classics and won two tickets to see The Kingston Trio at the State Theatre. Later in the week I made reservations at the State Café & Grill. I had promised the owner, Juan Martinez, that I would visit for dinner.
The State Café is just off Northampton Street on Fifth. Its open kitchen and intimate interior are a treat. The place was hopping, as I’m sure it usually is on a show night, being the restaurant closest to the theater. Our strategically located table allowed us to watch the “dance” of food preparation in the kitchen and the end of the Butler/Florida overtime game. Both were entertaining.
We started with Chips and Fresh Salsa, then split a house salad. Our entrees were the Chicken Punta Cana and the flavorful Skirt Steak Adobado. I’m not always a fan of sauces, but each sauce was a great compliment for the food. It was my first taste of Yucca and it won’t be my last. We topped it off with their Chocolate Cake, a layered feast of cake and a mousse-like chocolate treat.
Juan and Melanie were gracious hosts and thanked us for visiting and invited us back.
We had seen The Kingston Trio before and enjoyed their combination of folk music and story-telling. Saturday night’s show was excellent. The theater was almost full and the preponderance of gray hair was an indicator of just how long these guys have been around. They all played Martin Guitars and thanked them for making the best guitars in the world before being joined on stage by Director of Artist Relations, Dick Boak, to perform one of their biggest hits, M.T.A. While Bob Shane (an original member) has retired, Bill Zorn, George Grove and Rick Dougherty have carried on the Trio tradition well.
