You know that someone is loved in Lehigh Valley when you can sell two shotgun starts with 52 foursomes in a golf memorial tournament to honor a dear friend, mother, teacher, coach and wife. That’s the way I spent my Friday before the 4th of July, all in memory of Patti Heffner. Now I didn’t play in the tournament, I was one of the dozens of volunteers that day who helped put this tournament on. I must say that the committee who did the pre-event stuff should all go into the planning business. Two of the main planning guru’s were Patti’s husband, Paul, and his daughter, Amy. They were so well organized that everything went off without a hitch. I’ve been in tournaments where there is only one starting group and have seen disasters happen. Not at this event! There were thousands of dollars worth of prizes to be won, an outstanding food buffet after each group and lots of cheer all day long.

So, just who was Patti Heffner? I don’t have quite enough words to tell you everything about this remarkable woman, but she was a gym teacher at Catasauqua High School and an award-winning coach of the Parkland High School Girl’s Basketball team most recently, among others. To me though, Patti was a golfing buddy. She played with the girls every weekend at Blue Ridge Country Club, which is where the event was held. Patti was a very talented athlete. She was always pretty hard on herself, but still made us laugh as she would call herself names if she hit a bad shot.

Patti fell victim to cancer at a tender age of 51 in January 2010. It definitely wasn’t her time to go and she is greatly missed throughout the community. Will you be supporting anyone this year by playing in a Lehigh Valley golf tournament? Most of the funds raised went to Patti’s scholarship fund which helped three girl athletes this year. Kudos to a job well done Heffner family!
