A Jewish “Christmas Tradition” in Lehigh Valley

Contrary to Kyle Broflofski (from South Park), it’s not that hard to be a Jew on Christmas. In my family, we have one simple tradition and over the years I’ve come to find out that it’s may not just be our family tradition, it may be a Jewish tradition. It’s simple enough, whether or not Hanukkah or Channukah falls on Christmas, we’ll be eating dinner at a Chinese restaurant. This year was the same as last year, which was the same as the year before, we ate at Hunan Springs.

We three Jews of Allentown are, eating Chinese on Christmas. (That rhyme not working so much). So the three of us usually get two entrees to split as well as appetizers and soup. This year went according to script. Sweet and Sour soups all around and Egg Rolls for two of us … nothing too fancy.

This year, Hunan Springs had a holiday menu. It was paired down from the usual menu, but it still had some great choices on it. Our two entrees consisted of Chicken Lo Mein, a family favorite from Hunan Springs, and Dragon & Phoenix, a Chef’s Special of Chicken and Shrimp.

The food was delicious and the conversation was great. Somehow, we always manage to have a good conversation at that restaurant. This year the only difference was that I wasn’t the only one at the table who had AND knew how to use a smartphone. (Way to go Mom!)

Anyway, being a Jew on Christmas in Lehigh Valley isn’t bad at all. Besides, as I’ve been told, Jews have been frequenting Chinese restaurants long before “A Christmas Story” was a 24-hour tradition.
