Weezer at Musikfest

After a performance at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center last fall, Weezer made a return trip to Bethlehem. The rock group took the stage for the ninth night of Musikfest.

Weezer kicked off the night with fan favorite “My Name Is Jonas.” Lead singer & guitarist Rivers Cuomo led the band into “Hash Pipe,” with the crowd echoing along witht the chorus.

With a set list that included songs from each of Weezer’s eight studio albums, fans were definitely not disappointed. While leading into “Island In the Sun,” Cuomo gave some love for Bethlehem, chanting along “talking about Pennsylvania, not talking about New Jersey.”

With Weezer’s work spanning over twenty years, these guys still definitely know how to rock. Rivers thanked fans for sticking with them through all these years, promising that all the patience will be validated in just over a month when their new album Everything Will Be Alright In The End drops on September 30.

With that, the band performed their latest single “Back to the Shack.” Even though the Musikfest show marked one of the first times the track was performed live, it was clear that the fans have already labeled this as a favorite.

Other set favorites included “Surf Wax America,” “Beverly Hills,” and “Say It Ain’t So.”

To round out the set, Weezer covered Blur’s “Song 2” with WOO-HOOs echoing throughout Bethlehem (literally- I had friends who live about a mile away texting me to ask if that was the song that was being played).

As the crowd roared begging for an encore, the band took the stage once more. The rocking continued with my two personal favorite Weezer songs: “Undone (the Sweater Song)” and “Buddy Holly”. The bleachers shook as fans sang and danced along. As cheers erupted from the crowd, the band members joined drummer Patrick Wilson for a group drum solo to close out the show.

It may have been a short set, but Weezer absolutely proved that they still know how to rock after twenty years in the industry.

Musikfest wraps up today, finishing its 10-day run with a sold-out performance with Keith Urban. Fireworks, beginning at 9:45 p.m. will celebrate the end of the annual festival.
