Fall is almost here. We can already feel the nights getting cooler and the days getting shorter. It’s time to put away our summer shorts and tanks and replace them for sweaters, scarfs and closed toe shoes. As the summer winds down, we’ve got so much to look forward to this fall…..like apple season, or in this case organic apple season.

This Saturday will mark the 7th annual Organic Apple Festival at the Rodale Institute in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This event is a fun filled day of apple picking, a 5-k race, live music, family –friendly activities, and organic hot dogs grilled up by Maria Rodale herself. Plus, you can enjoy Maria’s apple cider float recipe.

What’s so different about organic apples? Besides the fact that they are delicious and healthy, they are grown without toxic pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides. Every apple is toxin free. Rodale Institute is one of the only organic orchards in our region. They are also known around the world for pioneering organic methods of farming.

Apple picking has continued to grow in popularity as being a fun fall activity that you can do with friends, family, and loved ones. The farm will have a variety of flavors and styles, and some that are not commercially available. There will be an apple tasting guide to review and all learn all the varieties. Baskets, apple pickers and carts will also be provided, plus a $5 vehicle fee for the day.

So come on out this Saturday and soak up some sun and fresh air on beautiful organic farm. While you are there, feel free to take a self-guided tour to check out their organic gardens, view the honey bee conservancy, visit the heritage breed chickens and pigs and shop at their organic store.

It will be a fun filled educational day for sure!
