For the past six years that I’ve worked at Discover Lehigh Valley, roughly two of those years I’ve spent writing for Lehigh Valley Insite.

But today will be my final blog post. I thought the best way to end would be with a Top 5 list of my personal favorite blog posts.

A New Christmas Tradition

Usually my favorite tradition during the holidays is my family’s Christmas Eve Dinner. For about a decade we have gone out to dinner at one of Lehigh Valley’s fine restaurants. A fairly new tradition has moved up the ranks.

Last year Casey asked me to come in and read to her second grade class. I had a great time doing it and when she asked me to do it again this year, I did not hesitate saying yes.

Bookstore

About two months ago I wrote a blog about taking Casey out for her birthday in Bethlehem. I never got around to part two of that blog… until now.

After we finished our wonderful dinner at The Apollo Grill, we went back to the Hyatt Place and hitched a ride with the shuttle driver to the south side of Bethlehem to go to The Bookstore. For months, we have been wanting to go to The Bookstore, a bar modeled after a 1920s speakeasy.

My experience at the Allentown Brew Works Craft Beer Festival

I am a fan of microbrews, or craft brews, not exactly sure which one they are called now. It is basically beer that tastes real good (although if your beer of choice is of the light variety, I’ll warn you now, this is not an event for you).

Casey received an email from the Brew Works in October promoting the Craft Beer Festival on December 4 at Allentown Brew Works. We got four tickets immediately; it was a great deal at $25 a piece if you bought tickets early. After a certain date, tickets were $35, but even at $35, it was still a great deal. Good thing we got tickets early – the event sold out.

Apollo

The month of October was “birthday month”: my mom, sister, and Casey celebrated their birthdays within the last three weeks. It actually was a good deal for me. I had four really good dinners, not including the night Casey and I went out in Bethlehem.

Casey’s birthday was last Wednesday, but we planned our night out in Bethlehem for Saturday. We had a comp room for the Hyatt Place in Bethlehem from our wedding, so we planned our night around that location.

Helping out at Teddy’s Birthday Party

Teddy

For the past three years I have volunteered to help out at “Teddy’s Birthday Party” at Roosevelt Elementary School in Allentown. Despite how it sounds, this was not a birthday party for our 26th president Theodore Roosevelt (his birthday isn’t until October 27). The birthday we were celebrating at Teddy’s Birthday Party last Thursday was the 100th birthday of Roosevelt Elementary School.

My wife, Casey, is the head honcho for this event. And even if I wasn’t her husband, I would still say she did a wonderful job. There were tons of games and activities for the kids to participate in. Face painting seemed to be a popular station for the kids.I didn’t get to walk around and see them all since I was put to work as soon as I arrived. I was stationed at the bean bag game that is pictured above. Not sure what the object of the game was, but the kids really enjoyed throwing bean bags at the target as hard as they possibly could.

The Great Allentown Fair’s grandstand shows

Back in April I blogged about how classic/prog rock band Rush was going to open up the 2010 Great Allentown Fair’s grandstand show lineup. Well, tomorrow is opening night of the Fair, which means the wait is finally over. I still think they’ll end up having the most impressive visual show of all the acts, with a lot of screens and lighting that is usually only found in arenas.

Keith Urban, Justin Beiber (still sold out) and Jeff Dunham are still slated to be taking the stage September 3, 4 and 5. Since my initial blog post, the final two shows have been announced, so here’s my take on them:

Lehigh Valley goes to the dogs this weekend

Dane

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not really a dog person. I’m not really an animal person in general. I won’t even let Casey get fish. It’s not that I am afraid of dogs or think they are disgusting creatures. I actually feel quite the opposite. Many of my friends have dogs and I enjoy visiting them and playing with them. It basically boils down to the fact that I can barely dress myself in the morning, how in the world would I be able to take care of a dog?

My buddy Chad has the beast of all dogs, a Great Dane, and his name is Brutus. A very fitting name for this monster of a dog. Brutus is not really much of a monster, more of a big baby, but it is a rather intimidating site when he spots you from the back of the yard and he begins galloping straight at you. I have mastered my matador skills to get out of his way so after one or two ole’s he comes back for a friendly hello.

Triple-A All-Star Game and Bocce Ball in Lehigh Valley

Tomorrow night Coca Cola Park will host the sold out Triple-A Baseball All-Star Game. I have been asked to be a runner for the TV talent. A runner basically goes out and gets whatever is not available at the park. So if a producer from MLB Network needs multi-colored Post-it Notes I will go to Staples and get them. It is not a very glamorous job, but I think I will get to see a glimpse of what goes into producing a live TV event. I will fill you in with my experience in my next post.

While we are on the subject of sports. Lehigh Valley SportsFest starts this week and goes throughout the weekend.

I got a little ahead of myself last week with the wedding blog. I skipped past the wonderful rehearsal dinner we had at Bar Cibi on The Allentown Fair Grounds. I have not been to Bar Cibi since it was the Fairgrounds Hotel, but I was hearing good things about it.

A person I know with The Great Allentown Fair has been there since it has become Cibi and suggested it to me. Didn’t even give it a try, I trusted her. I am glad I went with her suggestion. The dinner took place in the private room upstairs before hand. It looked great up there. We had our own bar and plenty of seating for our party of 40. Not sure what the plans are for upstairs, but they have this awesome deck that wraps around the top of the building and would be a cool outdoor hangout.
