Sublime with Rome

When I heard Sublime with Rome was coming to Musikfest this year, I knew I had to get tickets. I got a hold of my good friend from college and convinced him to come down for the show and to check out Musikfest and Bethlehem for the first time. We drove over to the South Side to park and hopped onto the shuttle, which dropped us off right in the thick of things on the North Side.

Young the Giant

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, last Friday was the kick-off of the most popular annual event in Lehigh Valley. Musikfest is the largest free non-gated music festival in the country, and it comes to Bethlehem for 10 days in the beginning of each August.

My friend Allison and I went to see Young the Giant at the Sands Steel Stage, with opening acts the White Rabbits and Portugal. The Man. I had seen Portugal. The Man a few years ago in Philadelphia and they put on such a fun live show. To be honest, I was more excited about seeing them than I was about seeing the headliner.

Heritage Day in Easton

It’s no secret that Lehigh Valley has a long and storied history in the early years of the United States of America.

All three of our major cities and some of the outlying towns played key roles in the beginning of our country, and they all celebrate accordingly on the 4th of July.

It’s getting to be that time again, as we “welcome” the summer heat here in Lehigh Valley. If you’re anything like me, you’re the type of person that prefers to stay cool and comfortable by any means possible in the sweltering heat.

Here are a few of the ways that I plan on keeping cool this summer season without spending a ton of money.

Incubus

Last night, Kate and I went to see Incubus for the first-ever concert at the new Sands Bethlehem Event Center. (Kim was there too, but she was with the other big cheeses up in the VIP suites.) We stopped by McGrady’s beforehand to get dinner, fuel up and grab a few pints, then made the short trek over to the Sands property. We found it easiest to park in the deck and venture through the casino and the Shoppes to get in line for the show, along with hundreds of other fans.

Some of us from work got the chance to tour the venue a few weeks ago so we were already familiar with the layout and space. This came in handy when we were ducking and weaving through the massive crowd in order to get to a good spot. I hadn’t listened to Incubus much in the last few years, but I used to be a huge fan so I knew most of the songs they played last night. Here’s a short clip from when they performed “Pardon Me,” my all-time favorite Incubus song. It’s not the best quality, but you get the idea.

Dinosaurs Alive

Last week, a few of us from Discover Lehigh Valley got a chance to tour the newest exhibit at Dorney Park: Dinosaurs Alive! I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect, but no matter how ready I was, I still think it would have totally blown my mind when I saw these dinosaurs up close.

The entrance reminded me of a scene from Jurassic Park, with the entrance gated off right next to their iconic roller coaster, Steel Force. Dinosaurs Alive! consists of 30 life-size dinosaurs, each of which has information listed detailing where they came from and fun facts about their diet and habitat. Some of the stations even had interactive outlines of the dinosaur complete with buttons that would move the corresponding body part, depending on what you pushed.

The Piano Men

I was able to kill two birds with one stone this past weekend, so to speak; finally visiting the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Easton to see a concert while at the same time securing a pretty awesome birthday present for my mom (which is today, so everyone make sure you mentally wish her a happy birthday).

I had never made it to experience a show at the State Theatre before this, but I can assure you that this won’t be my last time there.

Have you heard about all the concerts coming to the brand new Sands Bethlehem Event Center this spring and summer? They’re bringing in world class music and comedy acts to the magnificent 50,000 square foot venue, and from what we hear there’s not a bad seat in the house. The furthest you’ll ever be from the stage is 137 feet!

Just to name a few of the bands coming this May: Incubus, The Beach Boys, Blink-182, Flogging Molly and Alan Jackson. And yes, that’s only the month of May! You can find the full list here.
