And I want the world to know …

OK, a bad rendition of the classic Diana Ross song, “I’m Coming Out,” but when I heard the title of the exhibit at the Da Vinci Science Center, it was the first thing that came to my mind … call me an ’80s kid! The next thing that came to mind was that I can’t wait to check this thing out.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena in Bethlehem.

This was my first Chamber affair, and I was pleasantly surprised at the grandeur of the event. Stabler provided a big, open area to house the 1,000 or so people in attendance. As you can imagine, lunch for that many people could be a task, so they opted for boxed lunches and goodie bags at every seat. There was confetti streaming from the stage, a dramatic voice announcer and lots of audio-visual effects; it was quite a show.

I am so excited. I have tickets for Saturday night’s performance of “Beauty and the Beast” at the Civic Theatre! I am taking my 4-year-old niece and her mother and forcing my husband to accompany us. Hopefully the Phillies will have won the World Series, otherwise I will need to find a willing replacement!

Just want to know if anyone has seen it yet and how you liked it? It has been getting good reviews in the newspaper.

Hooray for PennDOT

Hooray

I used to think that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) was out to get the poor, innocent drivers in and around Lehigh Valley … particularly with how they designed the ramps we use to get on and off the highways. Anyone who’s ever tried getting off the Hamilton Boulevard exit from Interstate 78 eastbound (crossing two lanes of speeding traffic as Route 309 merges with I-78) knows exactly what I’m talking about.

But PennDOT recently made amends with the completion of what I consider to be the best improvement to Lehigh Valley roads in the last decade: a traffic light at the I-78 westbound off ramp onto Route 100 southbound.

I got to go to the Fire & Ice fundraiser event two weeks ago at Banana Factory in SouthSide Bethlehem. It benefits their GlassWorks studio, which I am crazy about. If you haven’t yet been to BF, you really need to check it out. You can tour the artists’ studios and visit their two galleries and see the exhibits and it won’t cost you a dime!

They also have classes on everything from digital photography, in case you want to make the most of that expensive camera your husband talked you into buying, to dancing, in case you have two left feet and your wife demands that you do something about it.

This past Saturday after a grueling “Glutes & Guts” workout with Angie at the Coliseum Gym, I decided to spend the afternoon with my mom and grandmother to take in some of the sights of the fall season.

We set out on a mission to pick our favorite apple of the season: the Mutsu (sometimes called a Crispin). The Mutsu is sort of a hybrid cross between a Golden Delicious and a Japanese Indu. They are green in color and look like a Granny Smith but they are sweet. They make excellent pies among other things.

Kudos to Easton’s National Canal Museum on receiving the 2008 Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Award for Visitor Experience at a Small Institution given by the Association of Science-Technology Centers.

The National Canal Museum was recognized for its innovative canal exhibit, which offers visitors a hands-on water-based lesson on how canals work. Easton Mayor Sal Panto described the award as the “Oscar or the Emmy of Tourism.”

Can_you_keep_a_secret

I want to let you in on a little secret: All of the posts on this blog are written by staff members of the Lehigh Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau. Our posts are about things we’ve experienced and enjoy in the Lehigh Valley region.

No one influences us to write about one attraction or event over another. We don’t get paid by the businesses or organizations we write about either. We’re just regular people who live and work in Lehigh Valley writing about stuff we like.
