One of my best local restaurant finds happened earlier this year when I signed up for an e-newsletter from one of my favorite downtown Bethlehem restaurants, Starfish Brasserie. I received an e-mail notice about a wine-tasting event they were doing that was only $20 per person and included four wine tastings and some light nosh. So my boyfriend and I decided to give it a shot.

It got started at 7 p.m. and was hosted by a wine expert who is also a wine distributor. All of the tastings had a theme such as a particular type of wine, such as merlot, or wines from a designated wine region, such as southern Italy. I think our theme was zinfandels.

Cloudcult

This weekend is going to “Rock and or Roll.” I got a concert doubleheader planned: Cloud Cult at Lehigh University’s Zoellner Arts Center Friday night, followed by the Kings of Leon sold out show at the Electric Factory in Philly on Saturday.

Cloud Cult, based out of Minnesota, is one of the first “green bands.” They travel from show to show in a biodiesel van, and they built their recording studio on the lead singer’s organic farm, which is powered by geothermal energy.

Learning to Ski in Lehigh Valley

I've never skied or boarded before; probably because I've heard stories from my friends about broken bones and concussions! But with ski season in the Valley around the corner, I'm determined this year to see if it's for me.

Since I only live 4-1/2 minutes from Bear Creek Mountain Resort, I thought I'd start there in case I have any mishaps on the mountain. They have packages for first-timers like me, which include a lift ticket, rentals and lessons for as long as you need that day (I'd probably get my money's worth right there!).

In 2005, I was visiting Missoula, Montana and attended a local production of this bizarre play called Bug. It was held in the back room of a restaurant with seating for, maybe, 50 people. A year later, Ashley Judd brought Bug to life on the national big screen.

So when I attended the premier of local filmmaker Zeke Zelker’s new movie, InSearchOf, I couldn’t hope but wonder if this film was going to hit the national spotlight in 2009? I guess only time will tell.

Kudos once more to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs: They have been chosen to host the 2010 Triple-A All Star Game! The announcement made last week marks the first time that a first-year team has been named to host the event. The game will be played on July 14, 2010 at Coca-Cola Park. It will be the culmination of three days of celebration for Triple-A Baseball with events including an All-Star Fan Fest and a Home Run Derby. The game will be televised nationally, which means the eyes of the minor league baseball world will be on Lehigh Valley, PA in 2010.

I had the pleasure of being part of the announcement and unveiling of the All-Star Game logo and a digital countdown clock that will be running until the first pitch of the game.

Wegmans! Yes, who would have thought it? Saturday night, my fiance and I were heading to an old friend’s for some cocktails and conversation, and we decided to stop at Wegmans in Allentown to pick up some dinner for the three of us. Now, I have been to Wegmans several times and I absolutely love the marketplace side, but this night I learned something new about the place: Saturday night = date/hook-up night at Wegmans.

The place was swarming with singles and couples alike. It was almost as if they were giving away free food. Maybe with the news of them lowering their prices this past week people thought they would try it out.

Recently, my wife Sybil and I, along with Megan & Mike Billowitch, attended a Wine Appreciation Class at Clover Hill Winery.

Kari Skrip did an excellent job of explaining the wine-tasting process. She actually brought it down to the level where even a newly minted fan of wine was not intimidated.

Its 5:05pm on Wednesday as I write this and I’m stuffed! Here’s why. Today I decided to invite Kim Lilly to join me for lunch, my treat. No, I didn’t win the lottery (yet), but I had promised her lunch on her last birthday. (NOTE:  I didn’t actually say which one!)

I was craving the Black Orchid’s ribs with my favorite two side dishes, collard greens and baked macaroni and cheese, so we grabbed a Dining Guide and headed over to 12th & Chew Streets in Allentown, in the old Louie’s location.

If you’ve never been to SouthSide Bethlehem’s First Friday event, then you just HAVE to go tonight and check it out.

The SouthSide district in Bethlehem puts on an evening event that takes place the first Friday of each month. The merchants, restaurants, art galleries and other venues open their doors and invite people in with live musical performances, free drinks and nosh, and special promotions/discounts.
