World Series of Bicycling

Last Friday, I returned, once again, to the Valley Preferred Cycling Center for the Opening Friday Night Race of the World Series of Bicycling. There was something familiar, yet there was a brand new atmosphere.

I have always maintained that Friday Nights at the Velodrome are family fun. Now it’s taken to the next level.

It may be a New Year, but I’m looking Forward to the Same old Same old

I can't wait to do these again

Everything old is new again and the “same old, same old” is not humdrum. Sometimes attractions and events that happen each year are the most fun Lehigh Valley things that I want to do again this coming year.

April 4th, 2013 is Opening Day for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Last season, our ‘Pigs fell short of replicating their playoff run of 2011, but they were in the hunt until the very end. Meaningful baseball down the stretch starts with a good April and I’ll be there again to cheer them on.

London 2012

Although a few soccer games have been played, the Olympics don’t truly start until after the opening ceremonies. Those take place, this Friday Night at 7:30. So in honor of the Olympics, I’d like to share with you a list of those Olympians with Lehigh Valley ties.

Bobby Lea (USA) – Track Cycling – Last year’s World Series of Bicycling Rider of the Year and a fan favorite at our very own Valley Preferred Cycling Center. He’ll be looking for gold in the Omnium.

VeloFest 2012

On the morning of Cinco de Mayo, I attended VeloFest at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. It was and most likely will remain the premier cycling flea market on the east coast. And it’s right here on the west side of Lehigh Valley in Trexlertown, Pa.

I showed up 15 minutes before the gates opened and the line was already snaking through the parking lots. There was the smell of someone cooking breakfast on a grill, the smell of bacon is just good. Anyway, there’s no shock at the line or interest, as I mentioned before the premier cycling flea market on the east coast. This is a big deal.

Velofest Marks the End of Summer for Me

From Opening Night 2011

Saturday was the end of my summer. For me, it’s a little later than most. When I attend VeloFest at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, it’s the end of my trips to the Velodrome until next year. In my head, I equate the Velodrome with summer, so when it’s my last visit for the season it’s officially the end of my summer.

VeloFest was packed with people, bikes, food and beer. The rain stayed away, and although it was overcast there were no damp spirits. The crowd was full of both amateurs and professionals shopping in a “tent city” for deals. I, myself, just enjoy looking at the wares and the bikes; some new, some old, all with a story. If it sounds poetic, then so be it.

Last week, I took some reading I’ve been meaning to do and left the office a little early to work offsite.

That site just happened to be the Valley Preferred Cycling Center (or the Velodrome as I still refer to it), which last week was home to the US Masters Track National Championships.

Valley Preferred Cycling Center

It’s a Friday night in Lehigh Valley and one of my favorite summer past times is ready to roll. This past Friday was opening night for the World Series of Bicycling at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center.

This is racing at its best. But before I get to the elite international competition, I should mention that the all-organic concessions are wonderful. My dinner that night was a turkey club wrap, fries and a Coke, which could be a staple of mine there throughout the summer (I do have season tickets).

OK, anyone who knows my husband, Don, from his Allentown days can picture him riding his road bike all over town. He even biked to Indiana in five days!

Fast forward to him moving up to Moore Township, a bicyclist’s dream. Don had his tandem tuned up, and together we set out to explore the area I’ve lived in since 1994.
