I can't wait to do these again

Everything old is new again and the “same old, same old” is not humdrum. Sometimes attractions and events that happen each year are the most fun Lehigh Valley things that I want to do again this coming year.

April 4th, 2013 is Opening Day for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Last season, our ‘Pigs fell short of replicating their playoff run of 2011, but they were in the hunt until the very end. Meaningful baseball down the stretch starts with a good April and I’ll be there again to cheer them on.

Lehigh Valley Mascots

Lehigh Valley has some adorable mascots already.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have Ferrous and Fefe.

JustBorn has Mike and Ike and a bunch of PEEPS.

Yocco’s has the Hot Dog King.

Bear Creek Mountain Resort has their big fuzzy bear.

And, now the Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey team has Dax, a fun looking beaver.

But, what about Lehigh Valley at large? What would be an appropriate, or even just the most fun, mascot that could encapsulate the whole area?

We’re not 100 percent sure, but we did come up with a few, let us know your thoughts.

Top Five Easton and Bethlehem Spots to Hit After Lehigh vs. Lafayette

Where to eat after the game.

After the tailgating, touchdowns and, hopefully, not a tie, the crowd at Fisher Field will need somewhere to catch a bite or a few drinks. After Lehigh and Lafayette meet for the 148th time on Saturday, both Bethlehem and Easton downtown areas will be awash in alumni, family, friends and students. Shops get full. Bars get packed. Seats get limited.

We’ve seen it before. In fact, we’ve been in the thick of it. You walk out of the stadium with your friends and family and everyone starts wondering where they should go next. The first spot you get to is packed and it’s a 45 minute wait. You didn’t make reservations because, well, whoops. So, where can you head in the Bethlehem and Easton areas following the game?

Lehigh vs. Lafayette

The rivalry renews this weekend at Fisher Stadium in Easton. Yeah, I said “the” Rivalry, nevermind Harvard v. Yale, you can keep your Ohio State v. Michigan, I’ll grant you some merit to Army v. Navy, but this is “the” Rivalry!

The most played rivalry in all of college football, started in Lehigh Valley on October 25, 1884. Yeah, it’s been around a while.

Hair by Eskandalo!

Lehigh Valley is known for having an almost disproportionately large number of hair salons and barber shops.

Most people I know are very loyal to their stylist often following them if they change shops. For close to 20 years I drove 90 minutes to go to the same lady but unfortunately for me, she retired.

On the Town

And the show must go on…

Just as the saying goes… and that’s exactly what happened at two Lehigh Valley college campuses this past weekend. After what was a powerless week for many people, theatre and dance goers were able to get out of the house to catch one of the stunning performances.

Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp

Last week I took my annual visit to Lehigh University to check out Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp which runs through August 14. This year I brought along my uncle, Hank, and his life-long friend, Roy, who are owners in our fantasy football league. I tied our trip to training camp and a much deserved lunch at P.J. Whelihan’s, as their reward for helping me with a furniture move.

The food and atmosphere at P.J.’s was as good as advertised. Cold beer, juicy burgers and more TV’s than you can count, helped bide our time till the afternoon training camp session started.  The team has switched practice programs this summer to include shorts and pads in their morning sessions; and full pads and contact in the afternoon session during the heat of the day. I assume this will help with those late summer games with 4 o’clock start times.
