Shop Local, Lehigh Valley!

Some small business owners probably day dream about having enough of an advertising budget to purchase billboard space from time-to-time. In fact, I bet a lot of small business owners dream about having an advertising budget.

Lehigh Valley, Pa = The Place to Be

Queue the music: “It’s the most wonderful time…of the year”. That catchy Christmas tune made famous by Andy Williams then cleverly adapted for a Staples commercial during their back to school season is on the minds of every hotelier in Lehigh Valley this weekend. Why? This is the most popular weekend to stay in the valley!

We are proud hosts to several major events and a slew of ongoing ones. Forget cleaning or laundry this weekend, gather up the friends and family and plan your Lehigh Valley itinerary. There literally is “something for everyone” going on.

Ribbon-Cutting

This morning I was among a large crowd of people celebrating the official grand opening of the Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce’s Office and Visitor Center. For years the chamber operated without a space of their own. Laura Long, the Chamber Executive used space in her house and her car as an office but her Board of Directors decided it was time for “bricks and mortar”.

That’s when the law of attraction kicked in. Not only did they find an empty space, they found a fabulous space, the old Bixler’s Jewelry store in the Lehigh Valley Mall parking lot. Visibility couldn’t be better; it is at the intersection of Rt. 22 and MacArthur Road, a gateway to Lehigh Valley.

It’s Time for Me to Fly (from Lehigh Valley International)

Fly LVIA

Let me start by apologizing to Kevin Cronin and REO Speedwagon but I couldn’t resist. Everyone likes to take shots at our airport. But I, for one, am pretty happy to have Lehigh Valley International in my proverbial backyard. I know, I know, they don’t have enough direct flights from here to there, but come on folks a little connection never hurt anyone for the convenience they provide.

I love the fact that when I get off the plane I’m minutes from my door step, and that makes all the difference in the world to me, especially while lugging bags, wife, kid, etc. So for a slightly increased fare, which isn’t always the case, but can be the norm for airports LVIA’s size (being a Scranton native I know from experience, just look at Scranton Wilkes-Barre International) the nominal increase in fare is so insignificant for the convenience the airports affords me. Not to mention when you add in travel time to some of the larger airports, parking fees and the overall aggravation in getting to those airports it makes LVIA a “no brainer” in my opinion.

I feel we are being watched!

With a wonderful six-year-old son at home and Father’s Day just behind us, I thought about the things my son and I like to do together in Lehigh Valley. I decided to add a twist to my list and add free. Sure there are the staples like Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and the Crayola Experience™, but when you add free it takes a whole new look.

So here is where Noah and I like to go…

Pinzgauer at Blue Lake

Over the past few years I have purchased several offers from Groupon for Lehigh Valley attractions. The majority of these deals have been for some kind of adventure, including a hot air balloon ride, indoor kart racing at Lehigh Valley Grand Prix and a whitewater rafting trip with Pocono Whitewater.

All of these adventures have been a blast, but Saturday’s All-Terrain Pinzgauer Tour was by far the most unique.

Memorial Day will always be a day remembered for honoring our fallen veterans, parades and barbecues, but a new tradition is quickly making a name for itself in @visitpa and @lehighvalleypa, free fishing day.

Every Memorial Day and Labor Day, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission allows adults to fish for free, in hopes of catching the fishing bug and become a regular angler.

VeloFest 2012

On the morning of Cinco de Mayo, I attended VeloFest at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. It was and most likely will remain the premier cycling flea market on the east coast. And it’s right here on the west side of Lehigh Valley in Trexlertown, Pa.

I showed up 15 minutes before the gates opened and the line was already snaking through the parking lots. There was the smell of someone cooking breakfast on a grill, the smell of bacon is just good. Anyway, there’s no shock at the line or interest, as I mentioned before the premier cycling flea market on the east coast. This is a big deal.
