When the first Fortune 500 list came out in 1955, the Steel debuted at #12, and remained near the top 10 for many years, peaking at #8 and rubbing shoulders with Gulf Oil, CBS, General Electric, Mobil, DuPont, Chrysler, and AT&T.

When asked what we do here at Discover Lehigh Valley I often answer, “We sell fun”. That’s over simplification, but you get the idea. We want everyone to know all the cool things there are to see and do in our great region.

Others who are charged with sharing their knowledge of the area are the fine folks at our PennDot Keystone Welcome Centers. Last Thursday I had the pleasure of escorting Kathy and Abeda on a “mini-familiarization” tour and duplicated the tour on Friday for Anne, April, Johnnie and Chris.

Fabulous Flappers

Did you ever think about what era you’d like to live in if not the present? For me I think it’s the Roaring Twenties. I love Jazz music as well as the Art Deco designs found in buildings, lamps and accessories of the time. If I were in my twenties back then I definitely would have been considered a “Flapper”.

That’s why I was excited to attend the opening party of “Fabulous Flappers” at the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley earlier this month. I was never exactly sure where the term “Flapper” came from but figured it had to do with the dresses they wore. I was close. According to information I picked up at the exhibit, the article of clothing that flapped was unbuckled galoshes the non-conforming free spirits of the day sported. It was a way to defy convention, like when kids wore overalls with one strap unhooked in the 90s. (You know who you are)

Its like eBay but not

If you’re looking for something rare in Lehigh Valley, where do you look? Something old, something new, or perhaps, just something new to you. When I’m in need of something along those lines, I head to K.D. Smith Auctions at Merchants Square Mall.

Someone once said “it’s like eBay, but not,” which is a fairly apt description

Live Like a Local on Main St. in Bethlehem

The second installment of the “Live Like a Local with George” web series takes us to downtown Bethlehem, PA; specifically Main Street. While there are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants to visit, I was forced to pick just a few and it wasn’t an easy task. To be honest, I already have footage ready for the next time we hit Main Street, and it won’t be far in the future.

It was a chilly December day, but we had fun perusing through Moravian Book Shop and checking out all the rubber ducks at The Foo Foo Shoppe. We may or may not have bought a few Christmas presents at Artfully Elegant and we definitely stopped by Tapas on Main afterwards for a few post taping sangria. Donegal Square was warm and welcoming as always, The Attic gave us some winter fashion ideas and Ostara* was as magical as always.

Lehigh Valley Mascots

Lehigh Valley has some adorable mascots already.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have Ferrous and Fefe.

JustBorn has Mike and Ike and a bunch of PEEPS.

Yocco’s has the Hot Dog King.

Bear Creek Mountain Resort has their big fuzzy bear.

And, now the Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey team has Dax, a fun looking beaver.

But, what about Lehigh Valley at large? What would be an appropriate, or even just the most fun, mascot that could encapsulate the whole area?

We’re not 100 percent sure, but we did come up with a few, let us know your thoughts.
