See the Phillip Fox Band on August 12

I’ve always wondered why Robbie Robertson started that famous tune by The Band with the line “I pulled into Nazareth…” Was it an artistic twist on the old Christmas story? Perhaps they ran out of gas 20 minutes outside of their destination, or maybe he already had the plans for his signature series Martin Guitar floating around in his head?

A few years back, Staples office supply stores used the famous holiday song clip “…it’s the most wonderful time of the year…” promoting back to school season. I thought that was a clever marketing ploy, but it’s just how I feel this time every year.

Why, you might ask? It is the start of free outdoor concert season in Lehigh Valley! Once again I can throw my long retired soccer mom chair in the trunk and head on over to live performances at the Levitt Pavilion on the SteelStacks campus in Bethlehem.

Who is Mary Lambert and why should you care?

Mary Lambert is playing at the Musikfest Cafe at SteelStacks in Bethlehem on March 30 and you may not know about it. Why? Because she’s “relevant.”

Let’s be honest. Some current complaints about popular Lehigh Valley music venues (even if they are bringing in some incredible acts, like Hall & Oates and Marilyn Manson, on a regular basis) are that the artists booked there may not be “relevant.”

LVMA16 at SteelStacks

On Sunday, George Wacker and I had the honor of presenting several awards at the 16th Lehigh Valley Music Awards. I wanted to make some observations. Many awards went to musicians that I have heard on a regular basis throughout Lehigh Valley. Dave Fry, Sarah Ayres, James Supra, Craig Thatcher, Large Flowerheads and Tower Suite have shown an incredible ability to grow and expand their musicianship.

Like most people, I enjoy a wide variety of musical genres. I listen to the big band and swing legends of my parent’s youth, the great crooners in the Sinatra era, as well as old punk, funk, jazz, blues and the top 40 hits of today. Actually, I think the only music I never adopted was country.

Here in Lehigh Valley, we have plenty of great music venues to satisfy whatever live music you’re into. There’s the year round stages at SteelStacks, Miller Symphony Hall, State Theatre Center for the Arts, Godfrey Daniels Music Listing Room and annual musical events such as Musikfest and The Great Allentown Fair, to name a few.
