With St. Patty’s Day right around the corner, I found a grand place in Lehigh Valley that will help get you in the Irish mindset: Jack Callaghan’s Ale House in Allentown.

Last week, my girlfriend Jeanne and I went to Callaghan’s for happy hour. I haven’t been in the place for over 10 years so I had no idea what to expect since it changed names and all. I was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely atmosphere of Kelly green walls, comfortable seating areas and an open kitchen environment. I must say that our bartender, Dale, was very friendly too.

Friday night at Pig Pen, Valentine’s Day watchin’ Nascar!

Pigpen

Haven’t been out on the town for a while. I think I may have a case of cabin fever – this snow is getting ridiculous. I usually don’t prefer the club-type thing on the weekends, but this weekend Casey and I are making an exception. Our wedding band Brian Kirk and The Jirks are playing at Pig Pen in Allentown tonight. We have seen them a few times, but it has probably been close to a year since we have last seen them.

Casey and I agreed that this will be our Valentine’s date. I find this much more romantic than going to some fancy restaurant and spending all my money on food. I would much rather spend all my money on beer and dance the night away to a great band.

Saturday night, my friends and I started out our evening by going to see my step-brother’s art show at Art N Soul Studios in downtown Allentown. His exhibit, The Rotten Candy Part 2, is on display from now until February 12th. It includes many originals along with themed ones that he has turned into his own.

Walking through the gallery, I decided my favorite pieces were “The Perfect Recipe,” which includes his own version of Hansel and Gretel, and “The Paint Brush” (pictured above), a portrait of the late JonBenét Ramsey with a twist.

Friday night Casey and I went out in Bethlehem for her friend’s 28th birthday.  I understand when a group of people get together for the big 21 or the milestone birthdays: 30, 40, 50 and so on. I don’t quite understand 20 people for a 28th. But there are a lot of things I don’t understand, so I just kept my mouth shut and went with the flow.

We started out at Looper’s Grille and Bar on the south side of Bethlehem. They have good beer there, so that made me happy. Yup, we had a good time.

Slot machines at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem_web version

When my friends and I were thinking about what to do for New Years Eve, the Sands Casino was one of the first places I thought of. I’ve been there several times and win or lose I always have a good time, so why not ring in the new year with the chance of some extra money in my pocket (or less, which is usually my case!).

By the time we got there a little after 9pm, The Sands was hopping! It was fun to be around all the people and the sounds of the casino. The cocktail waiters and waitresses were not only passing out free drinks but free party hats and noise makers. Everyone in the place seemed to be having a great time and really embracing the holiday. My friends and I went looking for the lucky slot machine that was going to make us rich for 2010 (not sure any of us ever found it, but we sure had fun looking!).

If you are looking for something fun to do with the kids, you’ve gotta head to Rascal’s Food & Fun in Allentown, Pa. I recently took my 15-year-old son and one of his friends and they had a blast.

When we got there I almost had to pay them to order dinner first because all they were focused on were the games, games and more games. Unfortunately someone had to wait for the food, which meant I had to stay behind. But I really wanted to play the games too!

Last week I decided to treat myself to a movie. While some people would never dream of going to the movies by themselves, I really don’t mind. I usually do it when no one else in my family wants to see the film that I want to see.

I have two favorite places to see a show, and they couldn’t be more different from each other if they tried.

If you’ve never been to SouthSide Bethlehem’s First Friday event, then you just HAVE to go tonight and check it out.

The SouthSide district in Bethlehem puts on an evening event that takes place the first Friday of each month. The merchants, restaurants, art galleries and other venues open their doors and invite people in with live musical performances, free drinks and nosh, and special promotions/discounts.
