As we get back into the swing of a new year, I’d like to take the opportunity to reflect on some of the things that made and make the holiday season great in Lehigh Valley.

5. Christkindlmarkt. Where else can you find such one-of-kind items that are so carefully crafted?

Live Like a Local on Main St. in Bethlehem

The second installment of the “Live Like a Local with George” web series takes us to downtown Bethlehem, PA; specifically Main Street. While there are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants to visit, I was forced to pick just a few and it wasn’t an easy task. To be honest, I already have footage ready for the next time we hit Main Street, and it won’t be far in the future.

It was a chilly December day, but we had fun perusing through Moravian Book Shop and checking out all the rubber ducks at The Foo Foo Shoppe. We may or may not have bought a few Christmas presents at Artfully Elegant and we definitely stopped by Tapas on Main afterwards for a few post taping sangria. Donegal Square was warm and welcoming as always, The Attic gave us some winter fashion ideas and Ostara* was as magical as always.

Christmas Steins at Christkindlmarkt

My family doesn’t mess around when it comes to Christmas. Every square inch of my parent’s house in Mountoursville, Pa  is transformed into Christmas-land. Obviously we go with the basics; some lights on the outside of the house, tree decked out to the nines in the living room, but then we take it the extra mile.

We have not just one, but three trees (one with regular ornaments, one with all snowmen, and one with mice). Christmas plates get swapped out with the normal every day ones. We have a living room full of Santas. German Nutcrackers line the stairs. A dining room overflows with snowmen. Kitchen cabinets are topped with a collection of holiday Coca-Cola bottles.

Bethlehem's Christmas City Village

An older couple is bundled up with their scarves double wrapped around their necks. It’s chilly and brisk as they look at the fanciful knitted animal hats at Girlfriend’s Boutique’s hut. They try them on and laugh for a second before moseying down past more huts, each time stopping to see what’s inside, to say hello, to enjoy their day.

The couple, like many others on this early December morning, are probably Christmas shopping. However, they are doing so at local vendors, at their own pace, and in one of the most beautiful locales possible.

Bethlehem Main Street lights

Wow! I just realized that in 15 days Thanksgiving will be here. Even crazier is that in just 16 days one of our local radio stations usually turns to all Christmas music until the holiday has passed. I happen to absolutely love holiday music. It makes me happy.

When I think about it and all the wonderful things Lehigh Valley has going on during this time, I am truly blessed to live and work in a region that has a town known as Christmas City, a.k.a. Bethlehem.
