For the second time in three weeks a Big 5 school from Philly has come up to Lehigh Valley to play some basketball.

Tuesday night I went up to Stabler Arena at Lehigh University to watch the Mountain Hawks take on the Hawks of St. Joe's. The game was competitive. St. Joe's would be on the verge of pulling away when Lehigh would make a run to keep it close.

Christmas

The 144th meeting of Lehigh vs. Lafayette on the grid iron was this past weekend on College Hill, but I headed up there for a different sporting event: basketball.

Friday night I went to watch my Temple Owls take on the Lafayette Leopards at Kirby Field House. My dad and Sneaks, who are also big Temple fans, accompanied me to the game. I know Sneaks is a big fan because of former Temple coach John Chaney. On the other hand, I think my dad feels obligated to root for the Owls due  to the amount of money that was spent on my long tenure there.

After four years of frustration, my alma mater, Lehigh University, beat its archrival, Lafayette College, on Saturday. Here are my top five thoughts on the game:

1. This was the 144th time the teams played each other, making it the most often played rivalry in college football.

Kudos once more to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs: They have been chosen to host the 2010 Triple-A All Star Game! The announcement made last week marks the first time that a first-year team has been named to host the event. The game will be played on July 14, 2010 at Coca-Cola Park. It will be the culmination of three days of celebration for Triple-A Baseball with events including an All-Star Fan Fest and a Home Run Derby. The game will be televised nationally, which means the eyes of the minor league baseball world will be on Lehigh Valley, PA in 2010.

I had the pleasure of being part of the announcement and unveiling of the All-Star Game logo and a digital countdown clock that will be running until the first pitch of the game.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena in Bethlehem.

This was my first Chamber affair, and I was pleasantly surprised at the grandeur of the event. Stabler provided a big, open area to house the 1,000 or so people in attendance. As you can imagine, lunch for that many people could be a task, so they opted for boxed lunches and goodie bags at every seat. There was confetti streaming from the stage, a dramatic voice announcer and lots of audio-visual effects; it was quite a show.

I am so excited. I have tickets for Saturday night’s performance of “Beauty and the Beast” at the Civic Theatre! I am taking my 4-year-old niece and her mother and forcing my husband to accompany us. Hopefully the Phillies will have won the World Series, otherwise I will need to find a willing replacement!

Just want to know if anyone has seen it yet and how you liked it? It has been getting good reviews in the newspaper.

Football fans in this area are in a frenzy over the Eagles, who are in the hunt for a playoff spot, and Penn State, who is vying for a shot to play for the National Championship. Oh, yeah, and the Phillies are about to bring the first Championship to Philadelphia in 25 years if they can wrap up the World Series tonight.

With sports on the brain, I’d like to shed some light on a non-traditional sport that Lehigh Valley offers: disc golf.

Aside from Gone In 60 Seconds and The Fast and the Furious, the whole “need for speed” thing has never really appealed to me. So when a bunch of us from the office went to Lehigh Valley Grand Prix to race some go-karts, I was willing to try it (since I had never driven a go kart before), but I wasn’t jumping up and down in excitement.

After we got suited up for safety, we entered the “arena” and got into our assigned carts. Once I got used to my knees being scrunched up in what I considered to be an unnatural position, I took off like a bullet! Vrrrrroooommmmmmm!
