On Thanksgiving Day

Some people call it a tradition to go out on Thanksgiving, whether for the dinner itself at a restaurant or for shopping. Some people enjoy their tradition of staying in with family and not leaving the house. We’re not here to judge, we just want to give you some options should you choose to go out on Thanksgiving day, whether it’s because you burnt your turkey or because you don’t want to attempt to cook. Maybe you just need some time out of the house. Lehigh Valley is full of options.

Ribbon-Cutting

This morning I was among a large crowd of people celebrating the official grand opening of the Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce’s Office and Visitor Center. For years the chamber operated without a space of their own. Laura Long, the Chamber Executive used space in her house and her car as an office but her Board of Directors decided it was time for “bricks and mortar”.

That’s when the law of attraction kicked in. Not only did they find an empty space, they found a fabulous space, the old Bixler’s Jewelry store in the Lehigh Valley Mall parking lot. Visibility couldn’t be better; it is at the intersection of Rt. 22 and MacArthur Road, a gateway to Lehigh Valley.

Wednesday night found my fiancée and I in the Lehigh Valley Mall looking for a place to eat. It just so happens that one of my favorite places to eat in Lehigh Valley is in that very mall, Dunderbak’s.

I have partaken in many of their dishes, their krauts and their wursts, but my favorites come from the Double Decker Mealwiches section.

Rosie santa sad face

All I’ve been hearing for the last two weeks from Rosie is, “SANTA! HO! HO! HO!”  She seemed like she really loved the jolly man with the presents, until it was time to take a picture with him. She looked at me like “NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT ME SITTING ON THIS GUYS LAP!” Then it was a full on freak out.  Talk about fun.

If you have a child who really loves Santa, there are many places around Lehigh Valley to go.  Christkindlmarkt in Bethlehem, Promenade Shops in Center Valley and Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall all have a Santa who will pose with your children and capture a precious moment.

Lehigh Valley’s finest summer produce

One of the things I really enjoy about the summer months is the fresh produce that can be found throughout Lehigh Valley. There is something to be said about an in-season piece of fruit or veggie. There are a few places that I must head to each summer to find the best-of-the-best and I really don’t think they are too much of a secret. Word seems to travel fast around the Valley when there is good food!

For example, if you say to someone, “Have you had any good corn-on-the-cob this summer?” one of the answers is going to be “Oh my God, you have to go to Newhard Farms Corn Shed?” Trust me, the corn there is out of this world. Some other answers might be Graver Farmstead in Bath. And I am sure you will get another one who says, “Have you tried Aw Shucks?” I am a diehard fan of Newhards though, so that will always be my first response.

While my recent bachelor party was a lot of fun, our wedding day blew it away!

The wedding took place at St. John’s UCC in Whitehall. I couldn’t have asked for a better ceremony from Pastor Becky; she even threw our favorite band Pearl Jam into the homily. The most amazing part was how many people actually showed up! The place was packed – standing room only – which was very special to us.

Isn’t it weird when your little sister is all of a sudden all grown up?

My sister recently purchased her own house, so we had to go furniture shopping. She obviously picked me to go with her, to test out the sofas since I’m a champion relaxer.

If money weren’t an issue (meaning, if I didn’t have to work), I’d spend my days writing New York Times bestsellers and my nights shooting pool around Lehigh Valley.

I love to play pool. In November, a coworker and I went to Indy for a conference and, of course, we had to find a place where we could shoot pool. That made me think, wouldn’t a list of places to shoot pool in Lehigh Valley be a fantastic resource for visitors and locals alike? So here are some of the places I’ve played at in the past six months:

Lehigh Valley had the ultimate visitor a couple of weeks ago: President Obama! One of his stops while he was in town was to Egypt Star Bakery. Well, that really got me thinking about all the delicious bakeries there are in this region. Don’t get me wrong, Egypt Star is awesome (their bread is killer!) and makes my Top 5 Lehigh Valley Bakeries, but there are so many others as well.

Here’s the rest of my Top 5 Favorite Lehigh Valley Bakeries in no particular order:
